Drawings and Other Objects
Images and ideas are taken from repetitive acts that are usually considered in relation to domestic or social activities, and which I rethink in relation to art-making. Inventories, mantras and ship spotting have all been starting points for this but most often it is actions that relate to dress and dressing that have been used to inform the shapes in my work.
Using paper, fabric and clay, I re-enact actions associated with the wearing and laundering of clothes borrowing from both historical and contemporary customs. In these works, actions such as folding, wrapping or curling are displaced from their usual context to reveal other visual possibilities for how they can be considered and understood. Presently I am working with printmaking techniques to document the changing nature of these shapes in order to further explore the nature of this displacement.
My art practice informs and is informed by projects, workshops and events that I have led with galleries, museums and other organisations, which has included the British Museum, Camden Arts Centre, Cartoon Museum, LSE Archive, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, National Film and Television School, Royal College of the Arts, Tate Modern, Turner Contemporary, Whitechapel Gallery and Wigmore Hall.
